LONDON—Sotheby’s evening sale of Impressionist and modern art on Feb. 3 was still less than a third of the way through its 39 lots when it became a blockbuster event that broke worldwide records, propelling the sale total far beyond the house’s estimate of £69 million/102 million ($111 million/164 million).
